Contact Lens Care Basics

Contact lens have revolutionized eye and vision care. While the latest version of these correctional vision devices are disposables, yet the more acceptable and durable version of contact lenses need special care and attention.

Unless maintained and preserved in accordance with guidelines given by the manufacturers or suppliers, these correctional vision devices can be problematic. They can be responsible for infections, irritation, itching, swelling, puffiness and even tiredness of eyes. In some cases contact lenses also start getting deposits leading to blurring or vision or other problems.

It is why eye specialists recommend that instructions given by the contact lens companies should be meticulously followed for their upkeep and continuous use.

While some companies provide solutions for rinsing and cleaning of contact lenses before and after every use others may be recommending different methods for keeping them in usable condition.

The markets are flooded with one-bottle solutions to contact lens maintenance procedures. You just need one bottle of solution and follow the instructions given thereon to keep your contact lenses free from dust or a possible infection.

Eye specialists also advise that solutions meant for one brand of contact lenses should not be used for a different brand. Switching rinsing and cleaning solutions can lead you to serious trouble as they can damage the lenses but also cause serious loss to the vision. Not every lens cleaning solution is compatible to every contact lens available in the market. Each brand has its own specific brand of solution.

Eye specialists also caution against ignoring or overlooking instructions printed on boxes containing soft lens solutions. Recently, one company had to withdraw its one bottle solutions from the markets after cases of fungal infection in a particular brand of contact lenses started reporting from various parts.

Moisturizing or disinfecting solutions may be available in separate packaging in some of the cases but now most of the suppliers have for the convenience of users put them in a single pack for simplification of rinsing, cleaning and disinfecting procedures.

It is also important that when you handle your contact lenses you should disinfect your hands first. Specialists' caution against use of moisturizing soaps as they may damage lenses. Also important is to ensure that your contact lenses do not get any protein deposits. Protein layers could cause serious damage to the eye besides affecting the vision adversely.

To keep your eyes moist and free from dryness, eye specialists advise usage of contact lens eye drops. And if your eyes are sensitive to some chemical, then opt for preservative-free contact or soft lenses for the safety of your eyes.
